At Sphere, we love to highlight independent eyewear brands and showcase craftsmanship from around the world. SALT. Optics (or SALT. for short) is one of our long-time favourite brands, and we love that their designs are brought to us through meticulous attention to detail and Japanese craftsmanship. Read below to learn where the SALT. brand came from and why they are a staple in the Sphere Optometry shop.
History
SALT. was founded in 2006 in California by Taylor Whisenand and David Rose, who were previously both professional surfers sponsored by Quicksilver. They joined forces with Ron Smith to help them run their business, and focused on a true labour of love, eyewear design. This seemingly out-of-nowhere transition from surfing to eyewear wasn’t completely so, as David Rose had worked for the infamous Oliver Peoples before branching out. This experience showed him, most importantly, how he could improve on the process and the product and has been able to create a focused brand because of it.
The SALT. Style
SALT. eyewear designs follow a specific colour palette inspired by tones of California’s natural elements. They focus their designs on fit and shape ensuring they could be known for great-fitting eyewear in a classic style with a slight nod to the surfer attitude. All of their eyewear is manufactured in Japan to the highest standard of Japanese craftsmanship dating back generations, using the highest quality materials, from Italian acetate to Japanese aerospace grade titanium.
The Business
The founders of SALT. believe in more than just perfect fitting, quality-crafted eyewear. They believe in the importance of running a meaningful business and working together as a close-knit team and being a supportive supplier to their retailers. They are dedicated to “establishing positive human connections that inspire,” and we are truly inspired by them!
